Entries now open for Weta Workshop student concept design competition

Calling creative Kiwi students: Entries are now open for the 2016 Gwangmyeong Concept Design Competition. Now in its third year, Weta Workshop fronts the local division of this international competition that fosters creativity and collaboration between New Zealand and Korea. At the same time as budding Kiwi artists spin their imagination into illustration, their Korean counterparts will do the same, 9,000 kilometres away.

Hundreds of stunning artworks have been generated for the Gwangmyeong Competition since its inception in 2014. Last year’s theme asked entrants to imagine a strange and fantastical “mirror Earth,” leading to all manner of vast sci-fi landscapes, extraordinary creatures, water-drenched urban splendours, and quite literally everything in between, landing in the Weta Workshop inbox.

This time, entrants are challenged to dream up their version of a steampunk-inspired South Korea.

“So, imagine Korea as a country where petroleum-based fuel doesn't exist and everything is still steam powered. What's your version of this industrialised, Asian steampunk world? Will you approach it with a costume, vehicle, your take on the world, or perhaps a combination of all three?”

This year, the Workshop is casting the net wide. Entry is open to all New Zealand tertiary students, with no limit on the number of pieces each entrant can submit. The winner will accompany Richard Taylor on a trip to Korea, with flights, transfers, food and accommodation covered by Weta Workshop. 2015’s winner was Daniel Voss, currently in his third year of a Communication Design degree at Massey University. Runner-up Tahiwi Hunt, himself a recent graduate of Massey’s College of Creative Arts, went on to interview at Weta Workshop and is currently immersed in a number of international projects with the Workshop’s design studio.

Concept design is not just about technical skill. The great concept designers of the world have a profound ability to evoke stories through artwork that transcends its medium. The very best concept design can leap off the page or computer screen and straight into the cinema, stage or exhibition space.

Entries for the 2016 Gwangmyeong Concept Design Competition close at 5pm, 19 September, 2016. The New Zealand winner will be selected by a judging panel featuring Richard and senior members of Weta Workshop’s concept design department. Together, they’ll be looking for strong technical ability, originality, and, most importantly, incredible story-telling.
