SAS College Rugby League grand finals kick off

For immediate release

It's all on the line in Auckland's college competition when defending champions St Paul's College and season debutants Wesley College clash in the SAS College Rugby League grand final this Wednesday.

Papatoetoe open the afternoon when they take on Sir Edmund Hillary in the Bowl grand final before Southern Cross play Manurewa at 5.45pm in the Plate.

But it's the match-up between St Paul's and Wesley that will take centre stage in the tripleheader tomorrow night on Mt Smart Stadium #2.

It's been a great year for St Paul's College, leading the competition with 6 wins and 2 draws to Tamaki and Wesley, advancing to the finals in the qualifying semi-final two weeks ago.

The south Auckland school trailed closely behind and could consider themselves lucky to be in the final, given they lost to Westlake in the final round of pool play.

It was their game against Kelston in the major semi-final which proved characteristics of a champion side, coming back from a 14-6 deficit at half time to win 28-22.

Auckland Rugby League's football development officer James Pulehega says this Wednesday's grand final will be huge.

"St Paul's will be refreshed after a week off footy, while Wesley will be fired up following last week's win," he said.

"St Paul's have a reputation to defend.

"The central Auckland school are renowned for rugby league and will be putting up a tough fight when they play Wesley.

"Wesley have really lifted the game in terms of competition. They're a prestige rugby school chasing the championship title in their debut season.

"It doesn't get much better than that."

Join us for all the action this Wednesday August 10 at Mt Smart Stadium #2 from 4.30pm.

Locals can catch three great games for just $2 or free entry for those in school uniform - gates open at 4pm, cash only.

The Auckland Rugby League will be providing a free livestream for all games which can be accessed on www.aucklandleague.co.nz.
