‘100 days’ to go to Rio Paralympics

The countdown begins in earnest as New Zealand’s Paralympians gear up for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games in September.

Emma Powell, ACC’s Head of Injury Prevention Partnerships and Delivery, says the remarkable achievements of our Paralympians over the past few Games and the more recent World Championships have been outstanding.

“We are all very proud of what each Para-Athlete has achieved just to gain selection. I know they will be striving to add their chapter to New Zealand’s Para-Sporting history and enhance the Paralympic legacy.”

As a major partner of Paralympics New Zealand (PNZ), ACC is proud to be supporting the team and to encourage and promote social change for the 1.1 million New Zealanders living with a disability.

“Through the example and achievements of our Para-Athletes ACC wants to motivate and encourage all New Zealanders to live active lives and to play to their strengths, including those rehabilitating from injury.”

Ms Powell says the road to recovery after an accident can often be long. ACC is supportive of their clients with disabilities to try Para-Sport as part of their rehabilitation.

“Recovery and rehabilitation can often be enhanced by being part of a group of equally motivated people who share common goals and focus on their strength and abilities.

Through the celebration of sporting excellence we aim to inspire people to lead active lifestyles and participate in sports at all levels.”

With 100 days to go, there are still a number of Para-Athletes striving to make the New Zealand team. The team will number between 25-35 members and join the 4,350 athletes from 178 countries, competing in 22 sports with 526 medal events at Rio.

ACC, in partnership with PNZ, TVNZ and Attitude Pictures is proud to sponsor what will be the most extensive television coverage of a Paralympic Games.

“This sponsorship further demonstrates ACC’s commitment to supporting our Paralympians and acknowledging the part they play in changing public perceptions of disability and the acceptance of Paralympic competitions alongside mainstream sport.”

It also gives all New Zealanders the opportunity to follow the free-to-air coverage and cheer our Paralympians on as they compete on the world stage in Rio, says Ms Powell.

The Paralympic Games take place from 7 – 18 September.
