Netball New Zealand announces 2016 Domestic Events Calendar
Tuesday 24 November, 2015
Netball New Zealand (NNZ) is pleased to confirm the details of the 2016 National Domestic Events Calendar, including the National Netball League.
Announced by NNZ Chief Executive Hilary Poole, Netballers across the country will travel to North Canterbury, Nelson and Hutt Valley to compete in the underage events, while the National Netball League will run concurrently with the ANZ Championship.
“Netball New Zealand is committed to taking our underage domestic events to towns and cities around the country and are proud that we can continue to do so,” Poole said.
“The National Netball League was a key outcome of our competitions review. It will provide the future stars of New Zealand Netball with an opportunity to experience and test themselves in a high level competition week-in/week-out.”
The National Netball League (NNL) is a development competition that underpins the ANZ Championship in New Zealand. It will run for 12 weeks from Sunday 10 April, culminating on Sunday 26 June with the Grand Final in Auckland. The competition will feature five teams (one from each Zone) playing a double round robin, including 14 post-match games televised on SKY Sport following ANZ Championship matches on Saturday orSunday, and seven standalone games.
Saxton Stadium, in Nelson, will host the Netball NZ U19 Champs from Monday 11 – Thursday 14 July, 2016. Re-opened in 2014 following the floods, Saxton Stadium features five Netball courts and is the home of Sport Tasman and many regional sporting bodies.
Netball North Canterbury will host the largest event on the calendar – the Netball NZ U17 Champs fromMonday 18 – Thursday 21 July, 2016. This is the first time the Centre has hosted the prestigious event, which attracts over 1,500 people including players, coaches, umpires, volunteers and spectators.
The newly renovated Walter Nash Stadium, part of the new Walter Nash Centre, will see the best New Zealand Secondary Schools teams converge on Taita, Lower Hutt. The event, held from Tuesday 4 – Friday 7 October, is the culmination of a number of regional qualifying events and showcases the best secondary school Netballers in the country.
