New Zealand Ultimate Names Women’s and Women’s Masters Teams to Compete at World Ultimate Championships 2016

Masters team highlighted by experience; Women’s team features fresh faces

New Zealand Ultimate is excited to announce the New Zealand Women’s and Women’s Masters that will compete at the 2016 World Ultimate Championships to be held from 18 to 25 June 2016 in London, England.

The women’s team has a very different look from the previous World Championship team (2012 in Sakai, Japan) with only Simone Balle and Jennie Parker returning from that squad. Nine of the players selected have previously represented New Zealand at age group level, with the New Zealand Ultimate youth high performance programme continuing to develop strong players who are now graduating into the senior team. New Zealand finished 8th at the 2012 World Championships and head coach Tim Germann will look to build on that success. A return to the quarter-finals will be a great result in what is expected to be an extremely strong field in the women’s division in London next year.

Women’s masters coach Simon Fogarty and his selectors have banked on experience in selecting their squad. 17 of the 22 players selected have previously represented New Zealand at a World Championship tournament. Captain Penny McCauley and vice-captain Alison Scarlet were part of the New Zealand Mixed team that won a bronze medal at the 2004 World Championships and will bring that elite success to the team through their leadership. The 2016 World Championships will be the first time New Zealand has fielded a team in the women’s masters division.
