2015 NZ Secondary Schools Netball Champs | Day One
Tuesday 6 October, 2015
Dark horses Wellington Girls College came out with an unexpected, but impressive, 31-20 victory over 2014 runners up, St Margaret’s College, on the opening day of the NZ Secondary Schools Netball Champs in Ashburton today.
After qualifying fourth at the Lower North Island Secondary Schools tournament, Wellington Girls’ win over St Margaret’s, the top qualifying team from the South Island, caused an upset to start the day. The undeniable defensive effort in conjunction with an impressive goal attack, Tegan Graham (93%), proved a winning formula.
Wellington Girls’ coach Emma Weenink (22) is a former NZ Secondary Schools and NZ under-21 squad defender, who sadly suffered a significant knee injury. But she has turned her hand to coaching and her efforts are bearing fruit. Wellington Girls continued their winning streak in the afternoon of day one with a 44-31 triumph over Southland Girls’ High School.
In other games on day one, reigning champions for four years running, Mt Albert Grammar School, had a comprehensive 43-10 win over Baradene College (Auckland), and triumphed over Roncalli College (Timaru) in the afternoon, 59-11. With a number of NZ Secondary School Team members - including Holly Fowler, Maia Wilson, Alanis Toia and Cait Dowden – their strong and early lead is hardly surprising.
Cashmere High School from
Christchurch made their NZ Secondary Schools Netball Champs
debut, unfortunately finishing just shy of a victory in
their opening match, with Waikato Diocesan snatching a
one-goal win, 36-35. It was a hard-fought match that
Cashmere led for the majority. Later in the afternoon
Cashmere drew with Wellington East Girls’ College,
33-33.
Day 2 of the NZ Secondary Schools Netball Champs
will get underway from 9am Wednesday morning.
