The Daybeaker Rally Wairarapa is Formally Launched

3 October 2015 will see two well known motorsport events combining to form what has been dubbed the Daybreaker Rally Wairarapa. Starting in the Manawatu village of Pohangina the competitors will traverse 4 special stages before heading to the northern Wairarapa and undertaking a further 4 special stages between Eketahuna and Masterton.

This will provide a fitting challenge for the competitors, especially as this event is the final round of the 2015 Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship. The tight and technical nature of the Daybreaker Rally stages, including the iconic Ridge Road, will be contrasted with the open and flowing nature of the Rally Wairarapa stages. This gives competitors an entertaining 160km of high speed competition, while the repeat use of stages provides a surprisingly compact event with only 180km for touring between the tests.

“It’s an idea we have been discussing for a while”, says Clerk of the Course Dave Davies. “Creating a new challenge for drivers, but one that that everyone can have a go at”. Which has been one of the guiding principles for the organisers. Making a rally that is just as accessible to the new competitors and “clubbies”, as it is to the stars of the sport who are competing in the national championship. All while making it a fun.

And fun for a rally competitor is testing themselves, their team work, and their machinery. It’s the thrill of going as fast as you can to master the challenges the road throws at you. It can be technically challenging in the tight and twisty parts, through to the high speeds of the more open and flowing roads. Each has its own rewards, and in this event there is a healthy mix of both.

“That was part of the attraction”, continues Davies, “each region has its own flavour, and its been a long time since both areas were used in one event”.

However, in order to keep the event accessible to all, the decision was made to retain a one day format, with the event based in one location. Once again Masterton will provide the rally base, with the superb location of the Copthorne Hotel and Resort Solway Park becoming Rally HQ, while the technical aspects of scrutineering will be hosted by new rally supporter Eastwood Motor Group.

It might be an early drive over to Pohangina for the first competitors, but the format of the event certainly allows the teams and supporters to base themselves from one location.

The organisers believe that the mix of competitive stages, ease of access, centralised servicing, and event format will also be attractive to those competing in the Malcolm Stewart Classic Rally and the Geartech Central Region Rally Series. As well as those looking to do a one off event or those wanting to do their first event.

Regulations and event Entry Forms will be available soon says Dave Davies. Keep an eye on the event web site and Facebook page for more information.
