AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND; Thursday 15th January 2015: To celebrate Waitangi Day,MTV Hits is inviting viewers across New Zealand to vote online for their favourite tracks of 2014, which will be presented in the ad free MTV Hits: Waitangi Day 100 countdown, byMTV’s very own Kiwi VJ Krit, on Waitangi Day, Friday February 6 from 10am on MTV Hits, SKY Channel 110.
The polls are open and the countdown fate is in your hands! Vote online now for your favourite five hits of 2014 at http://mtv.co.nz/waitangiday100. Entries will go into the draw to win an MTV prize pack, including awesome custom MTV Monster DNA headphones and more.
The big question remains, who will take out the number one spot? Will a home-grown Kiwi act prove to be New Zealand’s favourite? Or will an international superstar reign supreme?
On the local front, New Zealand singer and song writer, Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, otherwise known by her stage name ‘Lorde’, has been nominated in the MTV Hits: Waitangi Day 100 countdown twice, with her song ‘Yellow Flicker Beat’, which was released as a single from the movie soundtrack The Hunger Games – Mockingjay Part 1, and ‘Team’ from her debut studio album Pure Heroin. As one of the youngest contestants at just 18 years old, there’s no doubt that Lorde will prove to be fierce competition within the mix!
New Zealand brother and sister duo Broods, comprised of Georgia Nott on lead vocals and her instrumentalist big brother Caleb Nott on backing vocals and production, have been nominated in the MTV Hits: Waitangi Day 100 a whopping three times! The nominated tracks ‘L.A.F’, ‘Mother & Father’ and ‘Bridges’ were included on their studio albumEvergreen, which was released in August 2014 and debuted at number 1 on the New Zealand Album Chart by Recorded Music New Zealand.
However, Broods aren’t the only popular Kiwi contestants with the most nominations in the mix. They share the title with the talented 24 year-old singer, song writer and musicianBenny Tipene. Known for appearing on New Zealand’s first ever series of The X Factor where he finished in third place, Benny’s three tracks ‘Make You Mine’, ‘ Lonely’ and ‘Step on Up’are due to give Broods a run for their money.
Other successful New Zealand artists to make it on the MTV Hits: Waitangi Day list include;Ginny Blackmore & Stan Walker with ‘Holding You’; Timmy Trumpet & Savage with‘Freaks’; David Dallas ft. Ruby Frost with ‘The Wire’; Jupiter Project & Jetski Safari ft. Helen Corry with ‘With You’; Brooke Duff with ‘Nothing Compares’; Kimbra with ‘90’s Music’;David Dallas ft. Sid Diamond & Mareko with ‘Southside’; Brooke Fraser with ‘Kings & Queens’; K.One ft. Brooke Duff with ‘Same You’, P-Money & CTFD with ‘New Love’, P-Money & Gappy Ranks with ‘Baddest’ and Jeremy Redmore with ‘Run Run’.
However, it’s not going to be smooth sailing for the Kiwi artists as they’re up against big names such as Taylor Swift, Pharell Williams, Sam Smith, One Direction and Ed Sheeran (to name a few) who smashed the international music scene last year.
When asked for his professional opinion on who he thinks will rank the highest in the MTV Hits: Waitangi Day 100 countdown, Hauraki radio personality Jay Reeve says,
“2014 belonged to Lorde, so I’m backing our girl Ella to take it out. If she doesn't, it will be one of her friends/fans Taylor Swift or Katy Perry. I would love to see the brother sister combo of Broods up there as well, they have had an amazing year as well. Savage is the man too, it’s a toughie, let's see what the Kiwi public decide!"
MTV Hits: Waitangi Day host and MTV VJ Krit says;
“It’s definitely a fierce competition but I reckon our top winning tracks will be from a good mix of local and international artists. We might see Sam Smith, Iggy and One Direction up there, with our natives Lorde or Benny Tipene to take it out!”
