Beachfest action at Tahunanui

Live youth music gigs at Tahunanui will add to the action for young people this summer, thanks to Raise Up and Nelson YMCA.

‘Beachfest’ will feature a collection of Nelson-Tasman’s bands, artists, DJ’s and entertainers in live shows, off beat performances, and interactive activities at the Tahunanui sports fields on Saturday 27 December and again on Saturday 31 January from 4pm-10pm.

The ‘Beachfest’ shows feature acoustic sets from Liam Fitzco, Jacob King and the Tava Sisters, followed later in the evening by bands Paper Scissors, Paper City and The Dions, with local youth DJs Kayis, Helbronn Le and Forseti keeping up the beats until close down.

Nelson YMCA’s Youth Services Manager Sally Wood is pleased with the quality and diversity of the artists and entertainers lined up.

“Our events team have worked hard to provide an avenue for young musicians to take the stage in an open air public domain – performing in front of their peers is a real test of character and these guys get a huge buzz out of these opportunities.

“Live music is a powerful tool to bring together people from varying backgrounds and social circles to share experiences and make new connections. While the events are targeted at 15-18years olds, given the open space nature of the events and the awesome line up of local talent, these events may attract a wider audience.”

Complementing the live music will be interactive activities including The Truck’s Freshpark Skatepark, Blast Entertainment’s Sumo Wrestling and Gladiator Jousting and the ZM Foam Zone.

Wood says people are encouraged to dig out their best Hawaiian beach themed attire to win spot prizes from the ZM Black Thunder.

Thanks to funding from the Nelson City Council, the event is free for 15-18 years and is strictly alcohol and other drug free. Security and HYPE Street Ambassadors will be there to help young people to enjoy the Tahunanui beach area over summer at safe youth friendly events.

If the weather is wet on either Saturday ‘Beachfest’ will be moved to the following day, Sunday.
