Charles Bradley And His Extraordinaires Announce NZ Sideshow   28 Nov 2014

Bluesfest

Bluesfest Touring are thrilled to confirm yet another series of fantastic New Zealand sideshows, adding to the array of talented artists already announced to perform their own shows in our major cities next Easter. 2015’s Bluesfest sideshows are fair bursting at the seams with options to choose from. Music fans should prepare their diaries to make sure they don’t miss out on what promises to be a most impressive 2015 Bluesfest Touring Season.

Daptone/Dunham alumni Charles Bradley will be bringing Funk, Soul and his remarkable story to New Zealand next March. Along for the ride will be his all-star band The Extraordinaires, (comprising of members of The Dap Kings, The Menahan St Band, Budos Band and others) – a combo that will blow away audiences both in the intimate club circuit and festival scenes.

Jurassic 5 formed in the early nineties and quickly became known as one of the most soulful and socially aware Hip Hop groups of the LA underground scene. They weren’t throwback or old school, but they embodied a nostalgic sound that was also at once fresh and has remained the benchmark for original Hip Hop ever since. With their unique harmonies and dynamic stage presence, the Los Angeles collective - featuring DJs Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist, and emcees Akil, Zaakir, Mark 7even and Chali 2na - put on an amazing, high-energy live show that is not to be missed!

CHARLES BRADLEY

“Every brass blast and chicken scratch could have come straight off a 1968 Stax Records release, but it’s Bradley’s ragged, resilient powerhouse singing that makes this soul…”

Rolling Stone, Top 50 Best Albums of 2011

“Cathartic, explosive soul that reaches deep and shakes you to the core.” Austin American Statesman, SXSW review

Charles Bradley burst onto the scene after releasing his widely-praised debut album No Time For Dreaming (2011) at the tender age of 62. His incredible against-all-odds rise has been well-documented: how he transcended a bleak life on the streets to soul super-stardom, after being discovered impersonating James Brown by Daptone Records in Brooklyn.

A glistening voice in modern soul, with distinctively rough-hewn timbre, it’s the unmistakable voice of experience and personal connection to the music that keeps you captive when Charles Bradley is on stage. Each note and gruff inflection is an expression of his tumultuous personal path, and it has the world-over sitting up and taking notice, including the likes of SXSW and Rolling Stone.

"Bradley is a classic showman. He sells every syllable, dropping to his knees, outstretching his arms, shaking his hips. And that voice, both pleading and plaintive, anguished and extraordinary." – Los Angeles Times, SXSW review

Bradley returns to New Zealand in 2015 as part of the celebration of the release of his second album Victim of Love: an offering of gratitude to his fans and supporters, packed with joy and a broader musical scope, including experiments with psychedelic soul The Temptations explored in the early '70's.

JURASSIC 5

“We waited seven years for a gig this good, and we'd do it again … ‘If You Only Knew’, ‘High Fidelity’, ‘Thin Line’, and ‘Freedom’. Throw in a full band dance routine and close

the night with ‘What’s Golden' and what you have is THE PERFECT GIG. No encore needed when you end on a high like that, there’s nowhere else to go.” – TIMEOUT

They gave us timeless tracks such as ‘Quality Control’, ‘What’s Golden’, ‘Day at The Races’ and ‘Thin Line’ featuring Nelly Furtado before they parted ways in 2007. Although the band was out of sight they were certainly not out of mind and their lore grew on soundtracks, and in video games. After a huge sold out tour in early 2014 this distinctive six-piece are back and showing us what Hip Hop should sound like.

Jurassic 5 have released their first song since the reunion, ‘The Way We Do It’. It features production from the late Heavy D and a sample of the White Stripes Get Behind Me Satan single ‘My Doorbell’. View the new single "The Way We Do It" here.

The full 6-member tribe will be bringing the ‘J5’ party to New Zealand for a national tour, the show sold out last time so don’t miss this chance to see one of the world’s most loved hip hop groups!
