Song Released for Children’s Charity
Singing for Wishes
Wellington, October 2, 2014– When April Phillips was approached by Make A Wish New Zealand for permission to use one of her songs to use as a music bed for their videos of children receiving wishes, she went one better and wrote a song especially for the organization.
Phillips has had a long connection with the organization. Several years ago April, an actress, writer and singer, released a CD of jazz standards to raise funds for Make A Wish NZ and has to date donated over $11,000 from album sales. Phillips wrote the new song called “What I’d Do For You” so that the organization could use it for videos and fund-raising from downloads without having to worry about paying royalties.
“The lyrics are an expression of a parent’s unconditional love for their child and that desperate desire to be a guardian angel. Every mum and dad, and none more so than the parents of “wish kids”, would like the power to shield their children from pain and suffering so that they have the best life possible. We wish them the moon and the stars. The world on a string.” says Phillips
The musicians, recording studio, and graphics designer all donated their time and talent to the cause to produce the single which can be downloaded from ITunes. Phillips will donate 100% of download income to Make A Wish.
“The download costs less than a cup of coffee, so I’m hoping people will buy it in support of the charity knowing that it’s really a donation towards granting the wishes of Kiwi kids with life threatening conditions, with a song thrown in as a bonus.”
Shane Gorst, C.E.O. of Make A Wish NZ: “We rely entirely on the generosity of organisations and individuals around New Zealand to grant wishes for kiwi kids during a very difficult time in their lives. What April has done for us by writing this wonderful song and donating the proceeds is amazing and has made a real difference to a number of our very deserving wish children.
Ironically, after writing and recording the song, Phillips was close to finding herself in the position of needing the support of Make A Wish. Earlier this year Phillips’ three year old daughter was being tested for a fatal brain condition.
“My husband and I are incredibly fortunate because our daughter has been given the all-clear. But we’ve been through a harrowing time and our little girl has endured all sorts of challenging medical procedures. It’s made me even more passionate about the work of Make A Wish.”
Phillips (“The Lovely Bones”, “The Lost Children”, “Duggan”) will soon be back on our TV screens in a lead role in the upcoming family comedy series “Girl vs Boy”. She also recently wrote, co-produced and starred in two award winning films shot in Wellington; “Letter For Hope” and “Utu Pihikete”.
You can hear the song and access a link to the ITunes download at www.makeawishsong.com.
