The Museum of Wellington City & Sea hosts its second Songwriter Circle, part of its popular Third Thursday Series. From 7pm on Thursday 15 October, the Museum turns the spotlight on folk music with New Zealand musicians Sam Prebble, Mark Sommerville and Norman McClennan.
Songwriter Circle is a popular way of sharing original music among a gathering of singer-songwriters. The format encourages discussion about the works being performed and spontaneous musical collaboration.
Sam Prebble is a part of the alternative folk scene, playing mandolin, fiddle and guitar. His Third Thursday appearance will feature a new range of songs.
Reviewing his most recent show, Explorers Club: Antarctica, The Dominion Post said, "Prebble, now filling a role as guitar-slinging, violin-flailing hipster/jive-talking raconteur, creates the journey for the audience.
There is a devotion to the performance that is remarkable - we're simply lucky to have someone like him; creating songs that mean something, that share interesting history, that interpret lost artefacts - and showing some sense of exploration himself, Prebble deftly demonstrates that he knows his way, time and again, to the heart of a jangly-pop song, to the soul and core of folk music.”
Songwriter Circle programme also features Wellingtonian Norman McClennan. His song writing highlights themes of love and politics and is played to bluesy upbeat skiffle beats. He’s played shows throughout New Zealand, as well as further afield in the UK and Italy.
Joining Norman and Sam is Mark Sommerville. A singer, Mark also plays the guitar and harmonica and has been performing shows around Wellington for the past three years. He’s studied song writing and performance and is currently working on his debut album.
Speaking about the October event, Head of Learning and Programmes, Rachel Ingram says, “The Wellington region has many hugely talented musicians. Our Songwriter Circle is a way of celebrating this and gives musicians a platform to showcase their talents.”
Third Thursday is a monthly event at the Museum of Wellington City & Sea which showcases Wellington’s history, people, taonga and culture.
