Right on Mark for Laurie
Katie Laurie has started the
season in top form.
Laurie – nee McVean – and the lovely Dunstan Kiwi Iron Mark (owned by June Berrington) were comfortable winners of the Country TV Horse Grand Prix at the Dunstan Rotorua Jumping Show in Taupo today.
Thirteen started the class, including 2010 World Champs bronze medal winning eventer Clarke Johnstone (Cambridge) aboard the current eventer of the year Balmoral Sensation.
Four came through to the jump-off – Laurie (Mystery Creek) with Dunstan Kiwi Iron Mark and Dunstan Breeze, Rachel McGregor (Cambridge) aboard NZ Fireball and Johnstone with Balmoral Sensation.
In the end, Laurie and Mark were just too fast, stopping the clock in 32.5 seconds, with McGregor on 35.26 and Laurie and Breeze 35.45. Johnstone took a rail, and came home in 36.15.
The fourth
placing for Johnstone topped off an excellent show – he
also picked up wins in the 1.35m and five year old series,
three fourths and a sixth.
The hotly-contested Pony Grand
Prix saw 19 start, with five through to the jump-off.
Matthew Irvine (Hawke’s Bay) and the current Pony of the
Year winner Fun House were too good, finishing with a double
clear in 35.03 seconds.
However, hot on his heels was
Briar Burnett-Grant (Taupo) and Kabo Silver who also left
everything in place in 35.77.
Nick Brooks (Cambridge) and Versace C were popular winners of the Goldengrove Stud Seven Year Old Series, with Melody Matheson (Hawke’s Bay) and Cheltenham taking out the young rider class.
The show, which was held at the National Equestrian Centre in Taupo, had some challenging weather over the two days.
