Kids Kapa Haka Show Starting Soon on Maori Television

Kiwi kids will be able to learn all there is to know about kapa haka in KIA MAU! an exciting new series starting at 5pm on October 11 on Maori Television.

Aimed at beginners aged between five and nine years old, the high energy series takes viewers to a different school each week to enjoy their kapa haka performances.

And because it is a show for tamariki, it’s only fitting that KIA MAU! is hosted by young people.

Leading kapa haka performers Kaharau Keogh and Moana-Roa Callaghan, both 19, present the series with the help of Hawaiki James Morrison (7) Ngawairere Pihama (11) Te Ahu Paenga (6) and Waikahutia Tamati-Tupa’i (10).

During the 13-part series, they find out about everything from powhiri and poi making to traditional costume and carving.

Callaghan says she loves sharing her enjoyment of kapa haka with kids.

“I grew up in a really big family and I have introduced the joy of kapa haka to many beginners, young and old,” she says.

Producer Kay Ellmers, from Tumanako Productions in Auckland, says KIA MAU! also includes fun lessons teaching basic te reo Maori and specific aspects of kapa haka performance techniques.

“It’s a kids’ TV show, but it is also a teaching resource ideal for home and school.

“Because it is mainly in English, it is accessible to everyone and introduces language learners to te reo and tikanga Maori.”

Episode 1: October 11
Today our warriors give us a demonstration of Mau Rakau, we listen to a beautiful waiata from Finlayson Park School and Te Ahu and Moana-Roa show you how to make your very own tititorea.

Episode 2: October 18
Moana-Roa and Te Ahu have been practising their tititorea moves, we head to the sunny north to meet Te Kura Kaupapa o Te Rawhitiroa and we take a tour around a traditional Maori village in Te Hana

Episode 3: October 25
Today Hawaiki is learning how to play a Maori instrument called the Hue. We head to West Auckland to visit Hoani Waititi Marae for a beautiful waiata-a-ringa and we have more fun and exciting lessons for you.

Episode 4: November 1
Waikahutia is off to mau rakau class today. We have a fierce haka from the boys at Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Koutu and Moana-Roa teaches us some basic but beautiful poi moves.

Episode 5: November 8
Today Ngawairere teaches us about making traditional Maori clothing. The tamariki at Koromatua School sing us a beautiful waiata and we want you to join in with us for more fun.

Episode 6: November 15
Today Te Ahu is weaving a tipare. Kaharau is on the search for a new instrument to play and we check out the manu tioriori at Te Kura Kaupapa o Te Rawhitiroa.

Episode 7: November 22
Waikahutia is learning about maro. We’re heading to Te Hana to learn about a Maori tradition, the powhiri. Finlayson Park School will be blessing us with a beautiful waiata tira.

Episode 8: November 29
Hawaiki shows us his skills in the workshop carving a patu, Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Koutu are warming up to share another waiata with us and we have more tamariki from around the motu sharing their love for kapa haka.

Episode 9: December 6
Today Ngawairere is making a special poi, but not just any poi, a raupo poi. The fierce boys from Koromatua School are gearing up for their haka and Moana-Roa is off to watch some professional kapa haka performers at the Auckland Museum.

Episode 10: December 13
Hawaiki has a moko drawn on him today and we listen to a wonderful waiata from the tamariki at Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Koutu. Moana-Roa meets up with a friend who shows us her impressive poi skills!

Episode 11: December 20
The Kia Mau warriors are back with another Mau Rakau lesson. Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Hoani Waititi Marae are performing their poi and we take a look behind the scenes at a kapa haka group in Te Hana.

Episode 12: December 27
Today Ngawairere is teaching us about a traditional Maori weaving technique called taniko. The manutioriori at Koromatua School have another beautiful waiata for us and we head out to learn more about taonga puoro.

Episode 13: January 3
Te Ahu teaches us about a special taonga today, the moko. The boys at Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o te Rahiwhitiroa display their haka and we use kapa haka moves in an exercise routine.
