NZRL NSW too slick for NZ schoolboys

Halfback Tye Barry wove his magic over the closing stages to propel his visiting New South Wales Combined High Schools to victory over NZ Secondary Schools 28-16 at Auckland’s Westlake Boys High School.

In a contest that swayed one way and then the other, the Australians finally broke that pattern with converted tries to wing Cayne Dockar-Clay and Barry that carried them 10 points clear of their rivals.

Kelston Boys High School fullback Peter Scanlan brought the locals back within a converted try and then had a chance to edge them closer, but his slip-pass with a two-man overlap travelled behind his team-mates and into touch.

With seconds counting down, Barry sealed the win for NSW, kicking down-field for a 40/20 and then delivering a back-handed pass to present Ryan King with his second try of the game.

The contest quickly developed into a quid pro quo affair, with the guests striking first through wing Daniel Brown, powerful NZ forward Brandon Nangaiti (Otahuhu College) responding and King grabbing his first try on the stroke of halftime for a 10-6 advantage.

Playing into a strong southerly wind over the second half, New Zealand were always battling against the odds and their opponents had a royal chance to bust the game open soon after the break, when Kurtis Langdon spilled the ball over the try-line.

Instead, Aorere College forward Lewis Soosemea put NZ ahead, probing across-field, before finding a gap in the defence.

But the Aussies struck back decisively, when Dockar-Clay caught the NZ defenders napping from a quick play-the-ball and then, from the kick-off, Barry split the line in midfield to race away for the decider.

His mastery in the final minute provided icing on the cake and helped him to Man of the Match honours.
