Kiwi Involvement Ends in Quarters at Fernbaby Badminton International

TAIPEI DOMINATES FERNBABY AUCKLAND INTERNATIONAL

New Zealand’s participation in the Fernbaby Auckland Badminton International came to a grinding halt in the quarter finals at the Gillies Ave Badminton Hall today, with all bowing out of the tournament.

The biggest upset was that of top seeded men’s doubles pairing Oliver Leydon-Davis and Kevin Dennerly-Minturn, beaten in five games by a lower ranked pairing from Taipei. The Kiwis looked the goods through the opening two games but could not finish the match off, dropping the final three games to end their involvement in the tournament.

Both remaining singles players left in the draw also bowed out, with 15 year old Gaea Mari Galvez no match for her more experienced Taipei opponent in losing in straight games. Abinav Manota hinted at a semi-final berth, winning the opening game against Kuo Po Cheng (Taipei) only to lose the next three in a close tussle.

In the women’s doubles Emma Chapple and Danielle Tahuri could not foot it with their Taipei opponents, losing their quarter final in straight games.

Taipei has dominated the tournament, providing an amazing 14 of the 20 semi-finalists across all disciplines, including all four of the men’s and women’s singles semi-finals.

Semi-finals are played Saturday night (for results see link below) and finals for all events are played on Sunday at Gillies Ave Badminton Hall, play starting at 11am.
