DRAMA AS YOUNG KIWI DISLOCATES KNEE AT FERNBABY INTERNATIONAL

It was a dramatic opening at the Fernbaby Auckland International at the Gillies Ave Badminton Hall tonight, with young New Zealand prospect Nicco Tagle bowing out of the tournament in the worst possible way.

With his opening round game against Australian Simon Leung level at one game apiece, 17 year old Tagle fell in a heap at the back of the court early in the third with a knee dislocation. It is a terrible blow for the youngster as he is not only out of all three disciplines at the Fernbaby International but will now be awaiting further medical reports as to a possible timeline for his recovery. And with the World Junior Championships looming large in South America next year, fingers will be crossed that the prognosis is a good one for the Harbour player.

It was otherwise not a good opening session for the New Zealanders, with Luke Charlesworth the first to fully test the new scoring system in losing 7-11 in the fifth game of his clash with Tang Jie Chen (MAS).

Five Kiwis did make their way safely into round two men’s singles action in the early going, with Kent Palmer, Abhinav Manota, Callum Harfield and Daxxon Vong safely winning first round matches. Vong is the partner of Tagle in the men’s doubles so will now be all the more focused on a good run in the singles competition.

Play continues at Gillies Ave from 10am on Friday, with quarter and semi-finals on Saturday and finals on Sunday from 11am.
