NZ Performers Competition Opens for WOMAD 2015

WOMAD is on the lookout for talent to perform at the 2015 festival and the successful WOMAD Band Competition has been expanded to include not just musical performances but acts that could perform at other spaces and places on-site at the festival. This could include roving site performers, children’s programme performers, dance groups and cultural performances.

20,000 plus votes were cast each year for the competition and there have been nail biting finishes for previous year’s winners. The Balkanistas from Wellington and Beyondsemble from Auckland both battled fervently for the coveted slot by busking on the streets, getting themselves on their local radio, newspapers and talking to every fan new and old that they could to get their votes.

The winner will perform at WOMAD NZ, in New Plymouth, Taranaki sometime betweenFriday 13 and Sunday 15 March 2015 alongside some of the world’s greatest musicians and performers.

Site performers, dance troupes, cultural performers, soloists and bands are invited to nominate themselves by submitting an audio track or video via www.womad.co.nz. Once the entry has been uploaded to to www.womad.co.nz, anyone and everyone who wants to vote - does. Public votes can be cast for as many acts as you like but only one vote per act.

Entries are open now and close 16:30 on Tuesday 2 December 2014. The winner will be announced on Thursday 5 December 2014.

WOMAD - World of Music, Arts and Dance - the world's festival is happening right here in New Zealand/Aotearoa 13 – 15 March 2015.

WOMAD - World of Music, Arts and Dance the internationally established festival, brings together artists from all over the globe for a vibrant showcase of the world's many forms of music, arts, and dance. It all takes place in the stunning TSB Bowl of Brooklands in New Plymouth which is frequently described by visitors and performers as one of the most beautiful venues in the world.

Delivering 30 hours of entertainment over three days, WOMAD is unlike any other festival because of the wider experiences on offer.

The Global Village is home to a world-wide range of international arts, craft and cuisine stalls. Kidzone offers a free creative and interactive programme for festival-goers aged under 12-years.

Free participatory workshops and cooking demos by some of the artists are also popular highlights of the festival. The site decorations and installations are the icing on what is a truly slick and vibrant affair.

The legendary, unique, and friendly atmosphere of WOMAD simply has to be experienced to be believed.

First created in the UK by Peter Gabriel and Thomas Brooman over 30 years ago, WOMAD was first presented in Taranaki in 2003, and celebrates its 11th Taranaki presentation in 2015. In its tenure the WOMAD festival in Taranaki has had 170,000 visitors through its gates and generated over 70 million dollars for the local economy.
