Thousands of Kiwi Kids to Compete in the NZ Junior Rugby and Netball Festivals in Taupo and Queenstown

Grass root sports teams from around New Zealand will travel to Taupo on the 13th and 14th September for the NZ Junior Rugby Festival and NZ Junior Netball Festival. A second South Island tournament for the NZ Junior Rugby Festival will be held on the 20th and 21st September in Queenstown.

Event Manager Andrew Waldman says, “Since the first event 5 years ago, we have grown significantly to the point where each year we give 110 junior rugby and netball teams the trip of a lifetime. Combined with the NZ Junior Football Club Cup held in Auckland, we have 150 junior sports teams competing in the Global Games run events.”

The idea of hosting junior sports events came to Event Director Tyrone Campbell while on his OE seven years ago while sitting around a campfire one night in the Scottish Highlands.

“It was a bit crazy, but I believe that if you have a vision and you believe in it, you can make things happen,” Tyrone said in 2012. “Getting the festival off the ground was a lot of work, with more than a few challenges along the way.”

The success of the tournaments is attributed to the focus on sportsmanship. “We are fiercely dedicated to promoting sportsmanship and the friendship values of sport at all of our events. We believe kids should play sport for enjoyment first and foremost and that sport is one of the greatest means of bringing people together. We believe everyone should be treated equally regardless of skill levels, backgrounds or religion,” said Tyrone Campbell.
