IMNZ Charts to April 20: Counting the days to NZ Music Month
Happy almost NZ Music Month!
I'm writing
this on ANZAC Day eve - but you'll be back at work by the
time you see our latest missive. Which means that NZ Music
Month is a mere 3 days away. And whilst we and all our
colleagues celebrate New Zealand Music 365 days a week 24/7,
it's so nice to know that one month a year has a special
focus on our #1 passion. If you are a regular recipient of
this newsletter, no doubt you're also in the same boat - and
this month is our chance to really embrace the New Zealand
songwriters and performers that really do add so much to our
daily lives.

New
release fanfare
It's been 3 years since
London-based Kiwi Jayson Norris released his
sophomore album Freedom Twenty Eight and after tirelessly
touring the LP, the long awaited follow up is almost here.
Set for release on Friday May 2nd, Jayson's latest offering
Save My Soul is a diverse 5 track EP produced and
recorded by Kiwi Dub King Tiki Tanne at his Woodhill
studios in December 2013. Tiki Taane's production has helped
Jayson delve into multiple genres. The opening track and the
first single "Save My Soul" is a roots reggae track which
was born from the road during the pair's recent sell out New
Zealand tour and features Tiki and the soulful sounds of
Cocoa Jackson Lane. Yet throughout, the recording
still captures Jayson's trademark Pacific Soul sound.

Estère,
the girl with the MPC she calls Lola, releases her
debut album today on Tuesday 22nd April as a free
downloadvia www.estere.bandcamp.com. In the past
three weeks, Estère released her debut music video
for the song I Spy as well as opened for legendary
soul queen Erykah Badu and UK trip-hop band Morcheeba.
Featuring seven tracks, the album was recorded at Blue Barn
Studios in Wellington during the course of 2013. Before
heading into the studio, Estère pre-produced, arranged and
recorded all the songs off her album onto her MPC Lola. She
then went into Blue Barn Studios to re-record, polish and
lay down vocals for the final album mix. In October 2013
Estère also embarked on the Red Bull Prodigy collaborative
project with Washington D.C/ New York Producer Oddisee,
which saw them spend two weeks in a studio together, making
music. They subsequently released three songs, Flashlight,
Curtains Down and Noon. You can download the album on
bandcamp here and stream the album on

Via
MUZAI Records, every month The Attic will release a new
exclusive single by one of their favourite local artists.
The A-side comprises an original recording of the band's
output and to make things interesting, the B-side is a cover
nominated by The Attic residents. The fifth instalment
features darkwave outsider duo Strange Harvest spin
their synth drenched astral tales within the walls of the
Attic. The A-side 'Astronaut' puts Bianca
Prujean'shauntingly pensive vocals front and centre
whileJustin Walshaw paints streaks of guitar static
over a casiotone beat. With Walshaw taking on lead vocals,
Strange Harvest delivers a introspective and alien
rendition of Earl Sweatshirt's 'Chum' as the B-side.
Both tracks are recorded in The Attic (Dunedin,NZ) by
Adrian Ng (Mavis Gary) and delivered to your ears for
free. At the end of the year the collection will be compiled
into one physical release.

When Tourettes woke up one morning in 2012 in Skagaströnd a small fishing village in Iceland, his thoughts were not occupied with the idea of sitting in a van driving around New Zealand with Ben Salter at some as yet to be determined date in the future. In fact Tourettes didn't even know who Ben Salter was. That same evening however, Tourettes - who was on an artist residency in Iceland, embroiled in the depths of his first novel, - ventured out into the cool evening air and consequently stumbled across Ben performing a solo show in Skagaströnd's only little pub. The two became fast friends and one afternoon decided to climb up a local mountain (Ben in winklepickers and a suit, Tourettes in regulation straw boating hat and cut off jean shorts). As the weather was turning, huddling together for warmth, the two men made a pact. Should they ever make it out of Iceland alive, they should go on tour together. Fast forward to 2014 and not only did the two make it down the mountain, their dream has manifested itself into a reality as they announce the "Party Tricks and Boring Secrets Tour". Ben (The Gin Club / Giants of Science) performing solo material from his back catalogue, Tourettes celebrating the launch of his first ever book. A collaboration with illustrator Joshua Solomon (artist / tattooist) this is the first time Tourettes has published anything and subsequently the first time the public have had the opportunity to purchase a book of his prose. The book will be available on sale at the shows, as well as selected outlets. The tour starts onMay 2 at Auckland's Golden Dawn - find the tour dates here.
The Phoenix Foundation have wasted no time moving on to new recordings after the release of 2013’s Fandango. Luke Buda felt a sense of urgency to get to work with the band’s new drummer, Chris O’Connor and to push themselves into new directions. Fandango was the end of era, the full stop on the band's journey to find pristine production perfecto-land. 'Tom’s Lunch' is the start of a new chapter, and what better way to follow up a double album of mystical pop than with an EP of short snappy tracks, featuring two tracks mixed by David Fridmann (Flaming Lips, MGMT, Tame Impala). Tom’s Lunch EP will be released on16 May on CD and Digital formats, Pre-Orders Start today from Itunes, JBHIFI and direct from bandcamp. In celebration of their upcoming release of their brand-new EP ‘Tom’s Lunch’, The Phoenix Foundation announces a six-stop New Zealand tour this May/June presented by UnderTheRadar. Their first NZ tour in a year will give audiences a chance to see them perform the new songs live for the very first time. Tickets on sale today from www.undertheradar.co.nz and support for all shows will be announced in the coming week

See How St Vincent Doubled Her First Week
Album Sales

St.
Vincent’s latest album St. Vincent
came out on February 25th. The Found Group ran the
digital marketing campaign for the release. I recently
profiled The Found Group’s found.eetool, a link
shortener that makes it easy to form retargeting pools.
In the first week, 29,506 copies of St. Vincent
were sold (excluding the first week $3.99
Amazon MP3 sale). This is double the amount of first
week sales for St. Vincent’s previous album. So how
did The Found Group’s digital campaign play into
this?
The Found Group used found.ee along with a number of other approaches. For example, they used information from their retargeting pools to figure out what videos fans had already seen. When a fan navigated to the landing page on St. Vincent’s website they were served a page that catered specifically to them. If someone had already seen the first music video they were shown the second one
