Top Winter Athletes Give Free Skills Sessions
Some of New Zealand’s best winter athletes are heading to Cardrona Alpine Resort on Friday 29 June to give free skills sessions at a day-long celebration of snow sports.
International snowboarders Christy Prior, Stef Zeestraten and Milu Multhaup-Appleton join top freeskier, Hamish McDougall at a special ‘Welcome to Winter’ day at the resort hosted by Go Snow, the national snow industry body.
Christy is a member of Mountain Dew’s elite ‘Dew Team’ and scored a major international victory last year at the 2012 Burton US Open Rail Jam. Slopestyle specialist Stef is a regular on the NZ circuit and competed at the World Snowboard Championships in Spain last year. Completing the team are Salomon-sponsored athletes, Milu and Hamish.
Jo Lynch, Go Snow marketing coordinator who is organising the event, said budding skiers and snowboarders just need to show up from 1pm to ride with the pros and learn new tricks on Cardrona’s awesome terrain and park.
“It’s not very often that anyone can come and learn from the best in the business. Christy, Stef, Milu and Hamish are taking time out from their training schedules to answer questions, pass on some tips and share tales of performing at the highest level around the world.
“Snow sports have never been more popular in New Zealand. Welcome to Winter is all about giving local skiers and riders the chance to try this season’s gear, have fun and meet their heroes. Whether you’re a young grom or a seasoned weekend warrior, drop by our tents near the base terminal and enjoy an extra special day up the hill,” she said.
Welcome to Winter runs all day on Friday 29 June. In addition to the ‘ride with a pro sessions’ the event also features demos of the latest ski and snowboard equipment, give-aways and music, plus an after-party at Wanaka’s Mint Bar featuring local DJ crew, dirty ol' knights.
A similar event will be hosted at Turoa, Mt Ruapehu on Friday 20 July.
Go Snow promotes skiing and snowboarding across New Zealand with the aim of increasing interest and participation in one of the country’s fastest growing sports.
Go Snow is the public face of the New Zealand Snow Industries Federation (NZSIF), the national body that represents the country’s snow industry to the NZ Government, members of the public and other stakeholders. Formed in 1979, NZSIF members include retailers, equipment rental outlets, wholesalers, importers and manufacturers.
