A new Perth based campaign for an Australian and New Zealand cinema release for the new American horror film ‘Cabin in the Woods’ is attracting strong support from film fans.
Campaign co-ordinator, West Australian film editor Robert Woods, said the campaign had been launched following Roadshow Film’s announcement last week that it was sending the film straight to DVD.
Mr Woods said campaign supporters had created a ‘savethe cabin’ Facebook protest page, an online petition, special protest posters and had developed a special movie trailer, now showing on youtube, calling on Roadshow to reverse the decision.
‘Cabin in the Woods’ has been produced and co-written by Joss Whedon. His current film showing in Australia, ‘The Avengers’, has enjoyed the second highest box office opening in Australian history.
“Rising Australian star Chris Hemsworth stars in both movies, and New Zealander Anna Hutchison is a lead actor in ‘Cabin in the Woods’, ” Mr Woods said.
“This film is getting critical acclaim overseas, and by dumping it out on DVD, Roadshow is robbing fans in Australia and New Zealand of a great experience at the cinema,” he said.
“Britain’s Telegraph newspaper has called it a ‘clever take on the horror genre’, while the Daily Mail predicted it would be the surprise hit of the year. The Guardian’s critic has called the film ‘ingenious’.
“Australian and New Zealand fans of both Joss Whedon and Chris Hemsworth have been keenly waiting for this film’s release, and they are bewildered at Roadshow’s announcement that it won’t be releasing it in cinemas here,” he said.
Mr Woods said that than 730 people had signed the online petition since it went up on the web last weekend.
“We are also very encouraged by the online discussion and support being generated by our Facebook page and our film trailer,” Mr Woods said.
“There’s clearly a rising groundswell of protest underway, with some fans saying in web chats and comment that they will boycott other Roadshow films and refuse to buy the Cabin in the Woods DVD locally unless it gets a local cinema release,” Mr Woods said.
“I have contacted Roadshow, and while they gave me a good hearing, so far they haven’t changed their mind,” he said.
“We hope our campaign will demonstrate to Roadshow that there is an audience for this film, willing to pay money to see it in the movie theatres.”
