UCOL Chief Executive Appointment

Leeza Boyce has been appointed as UCOL’s new Chief Executive to succeed Paul McElroy upon his retirement in December. UCOL Chair, Malcolm Inglis, said that he is delighted to make the announcement on behalf of the UCOL Council, and is thrilled with the high calibre appointment.

Ms Boyce has spent almost her entire career in the tertiary and vocational education sectors, firstly as an academic and more recently as Institute Director and Chief Executive. She comes to UCOL from the TAFE Queensland East Coast in Australia where she served as interim Chief Executive Officer overseeing the amalgamation of Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay institutes to form a new TAFE with 28,500 students and 700 staff across 11 campuses. As a consortia board member of the Australia Pacific Technical College Ms Boyce has also made a significant contribution to Pasifika Education.

“Leeza has a superb track record with institutes she has led winning a number of state awards in areas such as sustainability, collaboration and service delivery.” Mr. Inglis said. “She also co-led, with the Vice Chancellor, a number of projects to co-locate delivery and build academic pathways between the TAFE and Sunshine Coast University.”

Ms Boyce has a Masters of Education (Learning Innovation) from Queensland University of Technology, a Graduate Diploma in Further Education and Training (Adult Learning) from the University of Southern Queensland, and a Bachelor of Business (Tourism Management) from the University of Queensland.

Ms Boyce is looking forward to the opportunities that lie ahead for UCOL. "As a family we are looking forward to moving to New Zealand and the naturally beautiful Manawatu Whanganui District, a regional area not dissimilar to where we live now. We have three children (two boys and a girl) who will also make the move, so the next few weeks will be busy for us," she said.

Ms Boyce will start at UCOL on 3rd November as Chief Executive Designate and take over the Chief Executive role from 1st January 2015 when Paul McElroy retires after 19 years as Chief Executive at UCOL.

“UCOL is in a very strong position having enjoyed excellent and stable leadership for a number of years. Leeza’s appointment will continue and build on the momentum of that leadership” said Mr Inglis. “Council is absolutely delighted to have someone with Leeza’s expertise and leadership skills taking up the role.”
